What is an innerspring mattress?

Structure of an innerspring mattress

Innerspring mattresses are one of the classic mattress types. They consist of a core of steel springs, which is supplemented by layers of upholstery and fabric covers. This structure ensures high stability, durability and excellent support, especially for stomach and back sleepers. A major advantage of innerspring mattresses is their breathability: the cavities between the springs promote air circulation and ensure a comfortable sleeping environment.

Structure of the spring core

The core of an innerspring mattress consists of 400 to over 1000 robust steel or metal springs, which form the basis for its stability and support. These springs are connected to each other and thus ensure a flat lying surface. After each load, the springs return to their original shape.

Protective layer

To prevent the springs from being felt directly, they are surrounded by several layers: A protective layer of felt or absorbent cotton fleece prevents the springs from damaging the upholstery layers above.

Upholstery layer

A thick foam upholstery layer ensures a comfortable lying sensation.

Cover

There is a cotton, polyester or pure new wool cover over the upholstery layer. The cover also contributes to sleeping comfort and protects the layers underneath.

Structure of innersprings

Regardless of the mattress type, the basic structure of an innerspring mattress remains the same. Differences in lying quality result from the type of springs and their arrangement.

Bonell spring core

The Bonell spring core mattress is the classic form of spring mattress. It consists of waisted steel springs that are connected to each other in such a way that the mattress yields elastically over its entire surface. This ensures a soft lying sensation, but makes the mattress less point-elastic and supportive.

Pocket spring core

Pocket spring core mattresses are characterized by high point elasticity. Each spring is individually sewn into a fabric pocket and works independently of the others. This allows the mattress to adapt specifically to the contours of the body.

Barrel pocket spring core

Mattresses with a barrel pocket spring core are among the highest quality spring mattresses. The springs are curved, which improves the point elasticity. As a result, the mattresses respond precisely to pressure and offer support in every sleeping position.

Which mattress type is suitable for whom?

Bonell spring core

Bonnell spring core mattresses are ideal for people with a low body weight who prefer a soft mattress. However, they are less recommendable for people who sleep restlessly or need support at certain points.

Pocket spring core

Pocket spring core mattresses are suitable for almost every type of sleeper. Thanks to their high point elasticity, they adapt to the body and are therefore particularly good for people with back problems, stomach and back sleepers and restless sleepers. This mattress is also the right choice for people who perspire heavily due to its good air circulation.

Barrel pocket spring core

The highest quality variant is the barrel pocket spring core mattress. It is suitable for people with a higher body weight and for people with back problems. The high price makes it worthwhile for long-term use.
